China has been aggressively capitalizing on the developments of new infrastructure facilities for further product sourcing. In April 2015, Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Pakistan. According to a report in BBC, China is keen to invest twice the amount of all foreign direct investment the country has received since 2008. The solid proposal has made Pakistan officials optimistic on making the collaboration work.
China will help Pakistan fund necessary infrastructure projects amounting to $46 Billion to open up a trade route linking China to the markets in Central Asia and South Asia.
The foundation of the proposal is to develop the Karakoram Highway which is the only connection that links China and Pakistan to date.
The 3,000km trade route that will be built over the next 15 years is expected to link the western Chinese city of Kashgar to the southern Pakistan port of Gwadar.
The CPEC is considered a major venture in the history of Pakistan, contract by China. Both countries have developed a close diplomatic relationship for decades and the current project seeks to further solidify the existing ties between China and Pakistan.
