EU Transport Funding
The European Union has allocated a budget of over 6.3 billion euros over the next 6 years to promote “smart, green, and integrated transport†as part of its Horizon 2020 research and innovation program.
Funding & Goals
For those seeking funding from this pool of 6.3 billion euros, the focus of the funding is in three primary areas: Mobility for Growth, Green Vehicles and Small Business, and Fast Track Innovation for Transport.
According to the European Union, the goal of this funding is, “to boost the competitiveness of European transport industries and achieve a European transport system that is resource-efficient, climate-and- environmentally-friendly, safe and seamless for the benefit of all citizens, the economy and society.â€
Funding through Horizon 2020 will provide support for the development of more resource efficient vehicles, aircraft, and vessels that are also cleaner and quieter. By promoting these aspects of transportation, it is hoped that the result will be a significantly reduced impact on the environment. Also, by promoting smart transport, it is hoped that movement in urban areas will be not only more efficient but also easier for residents.
What It Means For Freight Transport
For freight transportation, this funding and program investment means that in the future we may see more secure and efficient transportation options. Additionally, the development of smart transportation can bring us to a more safe and also less congested number of transportation routes. As a result, we will hopefully see not only quicker shipment times and less late deliveries, but also safer conditions for those in control of the vehicles providing transportation.
On a greater scale, Horizons 2020 aims to put the continent in a leadership position for transportation. It attempts to do this by providing reinforcement for competitiveness and performance in the European production of transportation vessels and vehicles.
Freight Forwarder Advantages
As a freight forwarder, it is unlikely the billions available for funding will be directly relevant to freight forwarders. However, with more efficient transportation development and more energy efficient transportation options, there may be some possibilities down the road.
It may be advisable to keep an eye on the developments in this field and seize upon potential openings that can give you a foothold in an aspect of the business that can help you outperform and out service the competitors in your market. Overall, it’s doubtful that any rewards will be immediate unless you’re a recipient of a portion of the billions of euros on offer, however, with some patience there are likely to be some gains in there for you and your business.Member Testimonials
